The founders of AAUW, a few women who had the privlege of a college education in the 1880's, wanted to use their education to extend the opportunity for higher education to other women. They believed that education is the key to achieving equity for all women. Through more than a century and still today, this belief remains the driving force behind AAUW, therefore:
Membership in AAUW is open to any graduate holding an associate degree or higher from a qualified U.S. educational institution, a degree from a foreign institution recognized by AAUW, or a foreign degree accepted at accredited U.S. graduate schools. Also, student affiliate memberships are available to undergraduates who are enrolled at regionally accredited institutions. Membership is NOT by invitation; persons interested in membership are always provided information and welcomed.
In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barrier to full participation in this organization based on gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.

AAUW Outlook is the membership magazine of the American Association of University Women. Each issue provides lively, thought-provoking stories about people and issues concerning women and girls and informs AAUW members about organizational activities related to AAUW’s mission: education and equity for all women and girls. The magazine is just one of the benefits AAUW members enjoy.
